How Many Acres Do I Need?

The rule of thumb is 6 fallow or sika deer and 3 red deer on the same acreage you would need for one cow. During the fall and winter, round hay bales and a supplement of shell corn and mineral. Deer drink a quart of water a day – even in winter.

Minimum farm requirements:

  • 20-60 acres of privately owned land capable of producing good pasture

  • a suitable 8 foot high fence

  • handling area and squeeze

  • herd of breeding stock

  • basic knowledge and experience of handling livestock license in most states
